Keep your self storage unit safe

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

You are going to want to get a lock for your unit that is not easily broken off by bolt cutters or a sledge hammer. The best lock to get is a disc lock that can be purchased at most hardware stores. Whatever you do don’t ever give your security number or keys to anybody else, a lot people will give there security number and there key to someone they trust, I can understand trusting someone but this day and age you never know. But let’s say you do trust this person with no doubt in your mind, maybe be they would never steal from you but it still is possible of them to lose the key, maybe it might be your last spare key, what a headache. What if your buddy or family member gets to the gate and the security guard will not let them in, well now you have to go to the storage facility anyway, waste of time. You should also try not to take anybody you don’t know very well to your storage unit, if they see something they like sometimes all the security in the world can’t keep people out, the old saying goes “if there’s a will there’s a way”. One last thing you should do is make sure if you have any crazy ex-wife’s or husband or anybody you know might like to get something out of your unit without your permission make sure to alert the storage companies’ manager and make sure the storage company is aware of the situation.

Sure a lot people might think a storage unit is just a storage unit so there is no reason to shop around but maybe you should stop and take a closer look. Looking around and finding little tell tale signs of good security, easy access, ability to with stand hazardous condition like maybe a fire or a bad storm is a good practice. If you notice the grounds keeping crew hardly keeps up and the fences look like there week could be a sign that if they don’t take care of their property then they might not care too much about yours. Also if they don’t pick up litter like fast food bags or other stray trash this could attract critters to the storage facility. Some storage units are actually built specifically to be able to with stand unexpected hazards like fire or bad weather, so if you want to know if a storage facility was built for these hazards then you need to ask management and you should always consult management about any question you may have. When looking into a storage unit picture what you are going to be most likely driving your items in and whether or not you think you are going to be able to get easy access to the unit, your truck might be too big and depending on the size of the aisle and the size of the doors on the storage unit you might not want to go through the hassle that it might cause you every time you have to go to the storage unit.

First take a second and think about all the trouble you have already went through and about to go through while on this fun little journey of self storage. Now think to your self is it a good ideal to go with some cheap old fragile boxes you have lying around the house or should you purchase new boxes that are going to be sturdy and durable and last though out your time you have them stored. When you go to buy boxes you can choose from many different sizes; small, medium, large and extra large. Being able to choose what size you want will help avoid trying to find the right box in a mess of boxes that are all different sizes, plus if you have boxes the same size this will help you out a lot when it comes to stacking. Boxes that are new insure that you are putting your items that you are storing in a clean box and a durable box that will no collapse. When separating what items will be going in what type of box it is a good ideal to remember to put heavier items in to boxes that are small because the seams are closer together and will help prevent the bottom of the box from falling out. So take the time and invest in some new boxes to save you the headaches of looking for boxes and hopping you will find good boxes in good shape that are the sizes that you will need.
