What do we mean by extreme temperatures?
Most places in the United States will have extreme temperatures at some point during the year . . . one or two days over one-hundred, or one or two days in the teens. That’s all natural and it doesn’t really affect your stored goods in a storage unit. What we are talking about is prolonged hot spells like we have in Fort Worth, temperatures over one-hundred for weeks and weeks, or someplace like North Dakota in the winter where the thermometer may never rise above zero for a couple weeks. Those kinds of extreme temperatures can actually damage stored goods and possessions in a mini storage. Here’s how!
The culprit: oxidation!
It is called oxidation, and it is a very normal chemical reaction caused by prolonged extreme temperatures. Without getting too technical on you, it has to do with molecules expanding and contracting, and it is that expansion and contraction which can ruin surfaces on items stores. Think of it this way: the tires on your car lose air and gain air depending on the temperature. Oxidation is a variation of that phenomenon. It can be quite damaging to cloth, to leather, and to vinyl. It can even do damage to electronics and computer components, as well as to collectibles, things like photo collections or baseball collections. We have known customers who kept their baseball card in a storage unit which was not climate controlled, and after a couple summer months they found their collection ruined. Same with art work and stamp collections. We also know of people who had their computer ruined by the humidity in Louisiana.
Oxidation is real, but it can also be avoided.
Climate control self storage works
We are not trying to sell up with regards to climate control self storage. It is true that it costs more, but honestly we are usually talking about a ten dollar per month difference in cost, on average. Is ten dollars really worth the risk of having your possessions ruined? We understand, ten dollars per month is $120 per year but still, do you want to risk your entire collection of valuables to save $120? We think not! No one thinking rationally would make that decision.
Play it safe. If you live in the southwest, the southeast, the Midwest, anywhere where temperatures can be challenging for a long period of time, you need to seriously consider climate controlled self storage.
