And now, a little self-storage education for you all!
What is not allowed in self storage?
It is easier to tell you what you cannot storage at a storage facility than to list all of the things you can store. A general outline of items you cannot store:
- Perishables
- Illegal items
- Explosives
- Expensive collectibles
- Electronics
The first three on that list are obvious; the last two come with an asterisk. You can store expensive collectibles and electronics in a storage facility, but the only way it should happen is by making sure you rent climate control self storage. Extreme temperatures can, and will, ruin electronics and collectibles like artwork, books, and delicate fabrics. The only way to protect against that happening is by paying for climate control, a steady temperature which will protect items from harmful effects of oxidation.
How safe are storage facilities?
There is no standard answer to this question. It depends entirely on the safety measures that a storage company offers. We identify the safety in any facility by the four levels of security. If only one level is utilized, it is our opinion that you should look elsewhere. The level of risk diminishes the more levels of security are employed.
What are the four levels of security, as offered by Blue Mound 287 Self Storage?
First, there needs to be a fenced perimeter to the storage property, and only one main access gate for the business, a gate where all arrivals and departures happen.
Two, there needs to be video surveillance around the clock, cameras recording everything happening in every nook and cranny of the storage facility.
Three, there needs to be computerized access key cards for the main gate and the individual storage units.
And four, there needs to be on-site management, providing the kind of security only a human being can provide.
Again, if all four levels are employed, you can rest assured that your possessions are safe. Still not convinced? You can always obtain renters insurance for a very small monthly amount.
Are there time minimums?
In almost, if not all, storage companies, rentals are month-to-month. If you find one which wants you to sign a contract for several months minimum, leave and find another place to do business with.
